Castaway Critters Pet Rescue is constantly working to save animals in our area. Here is the story of a kitten who would surely
have died in agony and alone if all the people involved had not stopped what they were doing that day to save her.
A kitten was lying on the side of the road, she appeared to be dead. A concerned woman stopped to check her, she raised her
head, she was alive! Hard to believe, she was starving, covered with fleas and maggots had started to work on her. The fleas
were so bad, that her blood was literally being drained from her emaciated little body. She was rushed to the Hiawassee Animal
Hospital. She was given a blood transfusion which was donated by Meegs, another cat. Liquids, antibiotics and flea treatment
were administered and maggots removed. It took four hours to bring her out of her catatonic condition. She spent the night
there and then went to a foster home where she was nurtured back to health. This is Stephanie's story.

Castaway Critters would like to thank Dr. Samuel Smiley, Wendy Stout, Julie King, Karen King, Deborah Norton, Heather Carpenter
and her cat Meegs, and all of Hiawasse Animal Hospital for there dedication to saving Stephanie. Special thanks to June Young,
Susan Scott and Steve Kiem - volunteers who made a difference!
