One of our volunteers works diligently trying to pull animals out
of animal control facilities and into rescues before they are scheduled
to be euthanized. She recently called and asked if we would take 4 pups that had
been brought into the Heard Co. A/C facility.
These puppies were found alongside a road and were in terrible shape.
She was afraid they wouldn't make it to us, but she was going
to try. We told her if she could get them up to us, we would
do our best.
In all my years of rescue, I have never seen pups in such shape.
Three had no hair at all with scabs on their little bodies. One was
in better shape, but had patches of hair loss. They had demedectic
mange and were so debilitated, you had to wonder how this
could have happened in their short little lives. They were probably
8-9 weeks old.
We lost two. One the same night she brought them, the other at
the vet a day later. The two remaining, Baldwin and Bonnie,
were given intense nursing care. They stopped eating, and
were given pepto bismol, and later were syringe fed with pedialyte
and chicken broth every couple of hours, along with medicines
to combat the mange.
They finally started to eat and Baldwin's hair began to come
in in patches, first on his ears, then all over his body.
It was a long process, spanning a couple of months. I had
to be careful that he didn't get sunburned, get too cold early
in the mornings... just like a mother hen, Baldwin turned out
to be such a sweet laid back pup... whereas Bonnie turned out
to be all puppy. It was wonderful watching them both begin
to feel better, and begin to play and run like a puppy should.
Bonnie is still here in her foster home and she will stay
there until the right family comes along for her, but Baldwin
was adopted on July 5th, to a wonderful couple who have promised
to spoil and love him for the rest of his life.
*Update - Bonnie has been adopted! She is happy and content in her new forever home.
