Castaway Critters received an urgent call from a wonderful volunteer
in another county advising us that several dogs from the local animal shelter were
going to be euthanized that day. Immediately, three of our staff members drove several
hours to the shelter; picked up the dogs, and headed back to the mountains. Two of
the rescued animals were Mattie and Dudley and here are their stories.
Mattie

Mattie, a small mixed breed puppy had an obvious leg deformity. Due to a birth defect,
her left front leg was twisted and shorter than her right front leg.
After close examination by a wonderful orthopedic surgeon, it was determined
that Mattie would need a major operation to correct this defect and eliminate
future problems. The estimated cost of this surgery was in excess of $3,000.
Her recovery period was estimated at eight weeks. She would have to be transported
from her adopted home in Hiawassee to Atlanta each week for a check up. The word was put
out to our generous supporters and the necessary funds were raised! We are happy
to report that Mattie's surgery and recovery was a success and she is happy to
be in her wonderful and forever home.
Dudley
Dudley, a beagle, basset hound mix, was so heavy that his belly touched the
ground when he walked.
As the result of an untreated injury to his left legs, he is unable
to use his left rear leg and his left front leg is somewhat restricted.
He had bad teeth, heartworm, and upper respiratory and bladder infections.
Dudley was adopted and is on the road to recovery.
As of this time, his teeth have been addressed and the infections
eliminated. He is also being treated for heartworm. As the result of a
strict diet of vegetables and chicken, he has lost 8 pounds and is getting
around much better in his new forever home. |
